The only bad part about Audio-Technica ATH-AD700 Headphones

I love my ATH-AD700 headphones. I won't go into it but they are excellent in every way and well worth the $100 price. Lots of reviews everywhere online will confirm this.

That said there is one problem with these headphones: the cord. Specifically the plastic/rubber material the cord is made out of. After a year or two of use many users notice that the cord becomes very stiff and inflexible near the headphones themselves.

At first I thought it was work hardening in the copper cable. It is not. It is the rubber shell itself. You can tell this by *gently* biting the cable near where it has become stiff and then again where it is still flexible. Only the outer shell becomes stiff, the inner copper conductors are fine.

My theory is that there is a reaction of this plastic/rubber with the oils from human skin and/or deodorant. This fits in nicely with the position the cable becomes stiff along.

While it is annoying this stiffening does not impact the performance of the headphones at all and I have yet to encounter any "brittle" breaks in the stiffened part. So, buy away. But just know that exposure to skin oils will cause trouble over the years.
